Frequently Asked Questions: Ocean Container Freight
Practical guidance on FCL vs LCL, SOLAS VGM requirements, and transatlantic transit times.
What is the difference between FCL and LCL ocean shipping?
FCL (Full Container Load) reserves a 20ft or 40ft container exclusively for one shipper, sealed at your factory and unsealed at destination. LCL (Less than Container Load) shares container space among multiple shippers with freight rates calculated on a Volume or Weight (W/M) basis.
What is SOLAS VGM and who is responsible for providing it?
Under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) SOLAS convention, the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) must be certified using an approved weighing scale before a container can be loaded onto an ocean vessel. Brosan Lojistik provides weighing services at port gates.
How long does sea container transit take from Turkey to the US East Coast?
Direct ocean container lines from Ambarlı or Aliağa reach the Port of New York & New Jersey in 16 to 22 transit days. Savannah and Norfolk are reached in 18 to 24 days.
