Detaillierte Technische Analyse zu D&D

Operative Mechanismen und kommerzielle Praxis in der internationalen Spedition

Demurrage and Detention are two of the most financially damaging operational risks in container shipping. Ocean shipping lines grant shippers and consignees an agreed number of 'Free Days' (typically 5 to 7 days for standard dry containers, and 3 to 5 days for refrigerated reefers). Demurrage is charged per calendar day for using terminal space while the laden container remains uncollected inside the port. Detention is charged per calendar day while the container is taken outside the port gate to the importer's warehouse until the empty container is returned clean to the carrier's designated depot. In congested ports, combined daily D&D fees can exceed $150 to $300 per container per day.

Managing Port Congestion at Ambarlı, Mersin & European Hubs

Praxisleitfaden nach türkischem Zollgesetz Nr. 4458 und Grenzvorschriften

Busy Turkish container terminals (such as Kumport and Marport in Ambarlı, or MIP in Mersin) experience periodic customs inspection delays (red line physical checks). If customs holds a container for 10 days while standard free time is only 5 days, the shipper faces automatic demurrage penalties. Brosan Lojistik mitigates this risk by securing extended Combined Demurrage & Detention agreements (typically 14 to 21 free days) through Tier-1 ocean carrier volume contracts.

Wichtige Compliance-Regeln beim Türkei-Export

  • •Demurrage = Container inside port terminal beyond free days.
  • •Detention = Container outside port terminal beyond free days.
  • •Port Storage (ardiye) is charged separately by the port terminal operator, distinct from carrier demurrage.

Häufige Fehler von Verladern vermeiden

  • ⚠️Confusing port storage fees (ardiye paid to port operator) with carrier demurrage (paid to shipping line), leading to unexpected dual invoices.
  • ⚠️Failing to inspect the container for pre-existing damage upon terminal pickup, resulting in carrier repair detention deductions upon return.
  • ⚠️Delays in courier transit of original bills of lading keeping containers trapped at the destination port past free time.

Häufig gestellte Fragen zu D&D

Autorisierte Antworten zu Haftung, Transportkosten und Risikoverteilung

Q1:What is the difference between demurrage and detention?

Demurrage is charged when a full container sits inside the port terminal past the free time. Detention is charged when the container has been picked up from the port but the empty box is not returned to the carrier's depot on time.

Q2:How much free time is standard for container shipping in Turkey?

Standard carrier free time is usually 5 to 7 calendar days for dry containers (and 3 to 5 days for reefers). Brosan Lojistik routinely negotiates 14 to 21 days of combined free time for our clients.

Q3:Does a customs inspection pause demurrage charges?

No. Ocean carriers continue charging daily demurrage even if the delay is caused entirely by customs inspections or government agency holds, unless force majeure waivers apply.
